Kolkata, 16th Aug: Former West Bengal Deputy Speaker and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Asish Banerjee was found dead on Sunday morning at a party office adjacent to his residence in Rampurhat town of Birbhum district. Police said his body was found hanging and has been sent for postmortem examination as part of the investigation.

A five-time MLA from Rampurhat, Banerjee had served as Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and was also a former minister in the Mamata Banerjee government. His death has sent shockwaves through the state’s political circles.

Police confirmed that a handwritten note was recovered from the scene. While the authenticity of the note is yet to be officially established, reports indicate it stated that no one should be held responsible for his death. The purported note also denied any involvement in corruption, expressed disappointment over his political journey, and advised younger members of his family to stay away from politics.

The note reportedly claimed that Banerjee had no executive role in the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA), stating he neither served on the tender committee nor had powers related to financial approvals or project clearances. He also alleged that attempts had been made to malign his image despite his limited role.

Banerjee had lost the Rampurhat Assembly seat to BJP candidate Dhruba Saha in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Earlier this year, he stepped down as chairman of the TMC’s Birbhum district core committee, though he continued as a primary member of the party.

Reacting to the incident, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee expressed grief and said the contents of the purported final note raised “serious and troubling questions” about the sustained smear campaign the veteran leader had allegedly faced. He also criticised the BJP and sections of the media, saying public allegations should not become a substitute for due process.

Police have initiated an investigation into the case. Officials said the exact cause of death will be determined after the postmortem examination and forensic analysis of the evidence recovered from the scene.
