Chennai, 15th Oct. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin announced on Tuesday that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response teams are prepared for deployment as Chennai and surrounding areas experience ongoing rainfall.
Stalin stated that disaster response teams from both the state and central government are on standby at 26 locations across Chennai and nearby districts. Additionally, 219 boats are ready for rain-related tasks throughout the state.
The Deputy Chief Minister informed reporters that relief centres have been established at 300 locations in the city, each with the capacity to accommodate between 50 to 1,000 individuals. These centres are equipped with basic amenities, including food and water, and 35 common kitchens are on standby.
In the districts of Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, and Kancheepuram, around Chennai, 631 relief centres are operational. In Chennai, 15 IAS officials have been assigned to oversee efforts to manage inundation, while senior IAS officials have been deployed across the state.
The state has set up 1,000 monsoon medical camps, including 100 in Chennai, with a total of 13,000 volunteers ready to assist authorities in rain-related tasks. In total, 65,000 volunteers are on standby throughout Tamil Nadu.
Stalin also mentioned that out of the 22 subways in Chennai, only the Ganesapuram and Perambur subways are temporarily closed, with no reported power cuts in the past 24 hours. Efforts to address waterlogging are underway at over 300 locations.
