‘Suspend the Cop or ..’: Pralhad Joshi on Dharwad Lathi-Charge

Dharwad, 14th Sept: Union Minister and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi on Saturday demanded the immediate suspension of a police officer who allegedly ordered a lathi-charge on villagers during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Narendra village on September 7.

The incident occurred when two groups reportedly clashed over the music being played during the immersion. Police intervened with a baton charge, drawing widespread criticism from locals.

Meeting residents and local leaders, Joshi launched a sharp attack on the police, questioning the officer’s authority. “The SP should listen very clearly, when you and the DySP are there, who is he to order a lathi charge? How can he do it?” Joshi said in an animated address before threatening to march to the Superintendent of Police’s office.

Speaking to reporters, the senior BJP leader alleged that the lathi-charge was “purposely done” and could have political motives. He claimed the police used force even on small children and elderly villagers during what he described as an “extremely peaceful immersion”.

In a post on X, Joshi wrote in Kannada that the villagers had provided help to officials during the Covid-19 pandemic, calling the police action “extremely condemnable, an unpardonable misdeed that can never be tolerated”. He warned that if the officer responsible was not suspended, he would sit in protest with the villagers.

Local authorities have not yet issued a formal response to the Union Minister’s demands. The incident has triggered political tension in the region as villagers await action from the state police department.
