Chennai Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have agreed to mutually part ways after an association that lasted almost two decades, the franchise announced the decision on Monday. Fleming, who had a strong coach-captain association with MS Dhoni, steered the franchise to five IPL titles, alongside two Champions League T20 triumphs.
CSK’s Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan said, “From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths. His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together.”
Rupa Gurunath, owner, Chennai Super Kings, said: “Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.”
“On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”
Incidentally, Fleming linked up with the CSK squad during the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 as a player. The very next year, Fleming took over the mantle of coaching the CSK set-up from the South African Kepler Wessels.
However, the recent results of CSK haven’t been encouraging. After winning the title in 2023, they haven’t been able to qualify for the later stages of the competition. They won seven games in the 2024 IPL, followed by 4 and 6 in 2025 and 2026. Under his coaching, Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket came last in Major League Cricket this year.
