Sports Ministry Suspends TTFI Recognition Over Governance Issues

Published:

The Sports Ministry has suspended the recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), citing continued governance issues within the federation. The ministry has also asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to create an ad-hoc committee to oversee the sport until a properly constituted governing body is in place.

“The IOA, in consultation with the international body (ITTF), will take appropriate action to create an internal regulatory mechanism, including the constitution of an ad-hoc committee, till such time that a duly constituted governance structure is restored in TTFI,” the Sports Ministry said in its order.

The decision was taken after the TTFI failed to provide a satisfactory response to a notice issued earlier this year. The federation has also failed to conduct its elections on time, which was one of the major concerns raised by the ministry.

The TTFI has been dealing with several issues in recent months. Secretary General Kamlesh Mehta was suspended in January over alleged financial irregularities, but the Delhi High Court later cancelled the suspension.

The federation also came under fire after Manika Batra was dropped from India’s Asian Games squad. Batra had criticised the selection process, calling it unfair and urging the Sports Ministry to take immediate action.

The ministry also raised concerns over athlete welfare, including the delay in conducting the National Championships last year.
