SpaceX to launch Starship Flight 13 with first Starlink V3 test payload

Texas: SpaceX is preparing for the 13th test flight of Starship, the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, in another major milestone towards developing a fully reusable launch system for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

The mission will mark the first deployment of next-generation Starlink V3 satellites as part of a test flight while evaluating several upgraded systems designed to improve the rocket’s performance and reliability.

Unlike an operational satellite launch, Flight 13 is primarily intended to collect engineering data, validate new technologies and support the continued development of the Starship programme.

Flight follows successful regulatory clearance

The upcoming mission follows Starship Flight 12, conducted in May, after which SpaceX and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reviewed issues involving both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage.

Following corrective measures implemented by SpaceX, the FAA granted approval for Flight 13 to proceed.

The company views each developmental launch as an opportunity to improve the vehicle through real-world testing.

What is Starship?

Starship is SpaceX’s fully reusable two-stage launch system comprising the Super Heavy booster and the Starship spacecraft.

When fully assembled, the rocket stands approximately 123 metres tall, making it the tallest and most powerful launch vehicle ever built.

The system has been designed so that both stages can eventually be recovered, refurbished and flown repeatedly, significantly reducing the cost of space missions.

Starship is expected to play a central role in NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon, while also serving as the primary launch vehicle for future human missions to Mars.

It will also enable SpaceX to launch significantly larger numbers of Starlink internet satellites than its current Falcon rockets.

Upgraded Version 3 vehicle

Flight 13 will use the upgraded Starship Version 3 (V3) configuration.

According to SpaceX, the latest version incorporates:

  • Larger propellant tanks
  • Improved avionics
  • Enhanced onboard systems
  • Performance and reliability upgrades

These improvements are intended to support increasingly complex missions as Starship moves closer to operational service.

Mission profile

The test flight will lift off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas.

Following launch, the mission is expected to proceed through several major milestones.

The Super Heavy booster will separate from the upper stage shortly after launch and attempt a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile, the Starship spacecraft will continue along a suborbital trajectory before deploying 20 experimental Starlink V3 satellites into space.

These satellites are intended solely for testing communication systems and onboard technologies and are expected to burn up during atmospheric re-entry after completing their objectives.

The spacecraft will also attempt an in-space restart of its Raptor engine, another important capability required for future deep-space missions.

Finally, Starship will attempt a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

When and where to watch in India

For viewers in India, the launch window is scheduled to open at 4.15 am IST on Friday, July 17, with a 90-minute launch window.

SpaceX’s live webcast is expected to begin at around 3.45 am IST, approximately 30 minutes before liftoff.

The mission can be watched live on SpaceX’s official Flight 13 mission page and the company’s official X account.

As with all developmental launches, the schedule remains subject to weather conditions and technical readiness, and the launch timing may change if required.

Step towards future Moon and Mars missions

Starship remains the centrepiece of SpaceX’s long-term vision of making space travel more affordable and sustainable through full reusability.

Every test flight provides engineers with valuable data to improve the vehicle’s safety, reliability and performance before it begins routine missions carrying satellites, astronauts and cargo.

The success of Flight 13 could bring SpaceX another step closer to supporting lunar missions under NASA’s Artemis programme and eventually enabling human exploration of Mars.
