Mumbai: Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has addressed speculation surrounding the casting of his upcoming biographical drama Kamal Aur Meena, clarifying that no decision has been finalised regarding who will portray legendary actress Meena Kumari in the film.
The project, announced in 2024, has generated considerable curiosity among cinema enthusiasts, with audiences eagerly awaiting details about the actors who will play Meena Kumari and filmmaker Kamal Amrohi.
Director dismisses casting rumours
Recent reports suggested that actress Kiara Advani was being considered for the role of Meena Kumari.
However, speaking to Mid-Day, Siddharth P. Malhotra clarified that the casting process remains underway and no actor has been finalised.
“Till it’s not locked, it’s not locked. It’s how the business is. It’s not only the actor; it’s the overall cost of the thing that is a determinant,” the filmmaker said.
His remarks indicate that multiple factors, including production considerations and budgeting, will influence the final casting decisions.
Film based on personal letters and diaries
Malhotra also shared an update on the film’s script, revealing that the makers have gained access to personal archives belonging to Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari.
According to the filmmaker, the script draws heavily from nearly 2,000 handwritten love letters and diary notes exchanged and maintained by the couple.
These personal writings are expected to provide an intimate and detailed portrayal of one of Hindi cinema’s most fascinating relationships.
The filmmaker said the material has played a significant role in shaping the narrative of the biographical drama.
Production expected to begin later this year
Providing a timeline for the project, Malhotra said the screenplay has been completed and the team is now focusing on finalising the cast.
“We have finished the scripting and are working towards the casting. The project will hopefully roll by the year-end,” he said.
Since its announcement, Kamal Aur Meena has remained one of the most anticipated biopics in Hindi cinema, with fans eagerly awaiting an official casting announcement.
Director busy with upcoming Netflix release
Meanwhile, Siddharth P. Malhotra is also preparing for the release of his upcoming film Ikka, starring Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna.
The film is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 10, 2026.
Kiara Advani has another major release lined up
As for Kiara Advani, the actress is currently gearing up for the release of Toxic.
The film also stars Yash, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi and Tara Sutaria in pivotal roles.
After facing multiple delays, Toxic is scheduled to release in theatres on August 26, 2026.
For now, speculation over the lead cast of Kamal Aur Meena continues, but the makers have made it clear that an official announcement will be made only after the casting process is finalised.
