New Zealand midfielder Sarpreet Singh has said he hopes his World Cup appearance can open doors for more players of South Asian heritage to reach football’s biggest stage.

The 27-year-old created history by becoming the first Sikh footballer to feature at a World Cup when he came on during New Zealand’s 2-2 draw against Iran in Los Angeles in their opening Group G fixture.

Speaking ahead of New Zealand’s next match against Egypt in Vancouver on Sunday, Singh said the moment carried deep personal meaning beyond football.

“It means a lot to me, it means a lot to my people, my family, my community,” he told reporters at the team hotel in San Diego. “I’m very happy to be the first, and pave the way for the rest of them coming through. I hope to see many more Singhs and Sikhs and Punjabi footballers coming through, and Indian heritage footballers.”

Singh’s milestone comes at a time when players of Indian origin are increasingly visible on the global stage, though India itself has never played at a World Cup. The country had qualified for the 1950 edition in Brazil after other Asian teams withdrew, but later pulled out due to financial constraints.

Several footballers with Indian roots are now representing other nations at the tournament in North America, including Australia forward Nishan Velupillay, whose mother has South Indian heritage, and Qatar winger Tahsin Jamshid.

Singh also recalled the support he received when New Zealand played in India during a previous tournament, saying the backing from fans there left a lasting impression.

“I always know I’m representing them as well as New Zealand, so I always try and do my best,” he said.

New Zealand will be aiming for their first win of the tournament when they face Egypt in their second group match on Sunday in Vancouver.
