The SA20 is set for a bigger fifth season as all six franchises have confirmed their retentions and new signings ahead of the auction.
Several big names, including Mitchell Marsh, Joe Root, Sam Curran, Jason Holder and Phil Salt, will feature in the upcoming season. Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have already completed their 19-player squads, while the other four teams still have slots to fill.
As mentioned in a press release, SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith highlighted the growing strength of the competition with the arrival of several international stars.
“Season 5 is shaping up to be our strongest yet,” SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith said in an official press release. “Bringing in a player of Mitchell Marsh’s calibre alongside the class of Joe Root, Sam Curran and Phil Salt shows the growing pull of our league on the global stage. What excites me most is seeing that quality alongside South Africa’s international and domestic stars at the peak of their powers.”
Marsh will be making his SA20 debut for Sunrisers Eastern Cape. He is expected to add strength to a batting unit led by captain Tristan Stubbs, Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke. Curran will join Durban’s Super Giants alongside England teammate Jos Buttler, while Root returns to Paarl Royals.
Pretoria Capitals have added Salt and Matt Short to their batting line-up. Meanwhile, Holder will join Joburg Super Kings, who are in search of a new captain after Faf du Plessis’ exit.
The Super Kings and MI Cape Town have seven and six slots remaining, respectively. The Capitals also have five vacantslots.
Season 5 is set to start on January 17 at St George’s Park, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape facing Pretoria Capitals. The final is scheduled to be played at Newlands on February 21.
