Rupali Ganguly on ‘Anupamaa’ vs ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ Buzz: “There’s No Comparison”

Published:

Rupali Ganguly has finally addressed the growing buzz around the comparisons between her hit show Anupamaa and the rebooted version of the iconic Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The conversation gained momentum after producer Ektaa Kapoor announced the return of the legendary daily soap, prompting speculation about how it might impact Anupamaa’s long-standing reign on Indian television.

Rupali Breaks Her Silence

In a recent chat with Telly Talk India, Rupali praised Ektaa Kapoor’s legacy and echoed her sentiments about the unnecessary comparisons.

“Ekta ji ka badhapan hai ki woh itni achi achi baatein kar rahi hai. Yeh sach hi hai. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is nostalgia,” Rupali said.

“For all of us, it’s a matter of great pride that the show is returning to our channel. I don’t understand how you can compare Anupamaa with Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.”

Ektaa Kapoor: “Stop Pitting Women and Content Against Each Other”

Earlier, in an interview with Brut, Ektaa Kapoor also responded to the brewing comparisons, calling them “unfair.”

“We are coming in for our purpose — to tell our story,” she said.
“These comparisons between lead characters and shows are so unnecessary. Pitting women against each other, pitting content against each other is so uncalled for.”

The Legacy of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

First aired in 2000, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi revolutionised Indian television and became one of the longest-running and most beloved serials. Produced by Ektaa Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms, it turned Smriti Irani into a household name and reigned over the TRP charts for years.

The reboot, which premiered on 29 July at 10:30 PM on Star Plus and JioCinema, marks a nostalgic comeback for fans of the original.

Anupamaa’s Continued Dominance

Despite the buzz around the reboot, Anupamaa continues to dominate as the top-rated show on Indian television. With Rupali Ganguly’s compelling performance and its emotionally resonant storytelling, the show has maintained a stronghold over audiences.

As both shows continue to air on the same network, viewers may be treated to two generations of storytelling — without the need for comparisons.
