Mumbai: National Award-winning actor Rishab Shetty is set to headline one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious historical projects, with The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj reportedly being expanded from a single feature film into a two-part theatrical saga. The large-scale historical drama, directed by Sandeep Singh, is expected to chronicle the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on an unprecedented cinematic scale.
According to reports, the first instalment is slated for release in 2028, while the second chapter is expected to arrive in theatres in 2029. The project is being positioned as one of the biggest historical films currently in development in India.
Budget crosses ₹500 crore mark
The film is reportedly being mounted on a budget exceeding ₹500 crore, making it one of the most expensive Indian historical productions ever planned.
The substantial investment reflects the makers’ intention to recreate the grandeur of the Maratha Empire through large-scale battle sequences, elaborate sets, extensive visual effects and authentic period detailing.
A significant portion of the shooting is expected to take place across Maharashtra, where many of the defining events of Shivaji Maharaj’s life and reign unfolded.

Rishab Shetty to portray Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Rishab Shetty will essay the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, one of India’s most revered historical figures and the founder of the Maratha Empire.
The actor’s casting generated considerable attention when the first-look poster was unveiled earlier. The image showcased Shetty in a regal and battle-ready avatar inspired by the legendary warrior king.
The project comes after Shetty’s acclaimed performance in Kantara, which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor and elevated his standing as one of India’s leading performers.
The role is expected to be among the most challenging and significant of his career.
Star-studded cast and acclaimed crew
The film boasts a notable ensemble cast alongside Rishab Shetty.
Actor Vivek Oberoi will portray Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, while Shefali Shah has been cast as Rajmata Jijabai. Actress Zanai Bhosle will play Maharani Sai Bhosale.
The makers have also assembled a highly respected technical team.
Renowned cinematographer Ravi Varman will handle the film’s visuals, while music will be composed by Pritam Chakraborty. Acclaimed lyricist Prasoon Joshi, Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, action director Craig Macrae and editor Philomin Raj are also part of the project.

According to reports, the film is expected to be released in seven languages, significantly expanding its reach beyond regional and Hindi-speaking audiences.

Filming to begin after Jai Hanuman
Principal photography for the project is expected to commence after Rishab Shetty completes work on Jai Hanuman, directed by Prashanth Varma.
In that film, Shetty will portray the Hindu deity Hanuman, adding another major mythological role to his upcoming slate.
With Jai Hanuman expected in 2027, the actor’s schedule is now lined up with the two chapters of The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj releasing in 2028 and 2029 respectively.
One of the biggest historical films in the making
