Following Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) disappointing eighth-place finish in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, former CSK player Ravichandran Ashwin outlined three key areas that require improvement: a flawed, top-heavy auction strategy, a lack of team coordination, and poor injury management.
Ashwin emphasised that the five-time champions must change their approach and focus on building a more balanced squad to regain their winning form. He praised the efforts of Sanju Samson, who scored two centuries this season and amassed 477 runs. He also commended the performances of Akeal Hosein, who claimed eight wickets, and Anshul Kamboj, who enjoyed an impressive campaign, taking 21 wickets.
However, Ashwin pointed out that the team’s auction strategy needs to be reworked and refined. He noted that the two teams that signed Venkatesh Iyer and Jason Holder for ₹7 crore each reached the final. According to Ashwin, instead of investing ₹14 crore in a single player, CSK could have acquired both players, thereby creating a more balanced squad that combined youth and experience. He further added that the team also faced issues with role clarity.
Another major concern highlighted by Ashwin was the number of injuries suffered by the players. Injuries have long been a recurring challenge for CSK, with several players often sidelined during the season. The franchise must find a way to manage these setbacks more effectively, as its inability to cope with injuries continues to be a significant obstacle.
