Priyank Kharge Sparks Row After Questioning Assam’s ‘Talent’; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls Him ‘First-Class Idiot’

Published:

A major political row erupted on Monday after Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge made controversial remarks questioning the “talent” of people from Assam, drawing sharp criticism from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who hit back, calling Kharge a “first-class idiot.”

The controversy began when Priyank Kharge, speaking at a public event in Karnataka, reportedly questioned the competence and governance model of Assam, implying that the northeastern state lacked the kind of “intellectual and industrial progress” seen in southern India. His comments quickly went viral, sparking outrage among political leaders and citizens from Assam.

Reacting strongly, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Priyank Kharge is a first-class idiot. These are the people who look down upon Assam and the Northeast without knowing our contribution to the nation. We don’t need validation from them.”

Sarma further added that such remarks reflect the Congress party’s deep-seated arrogance and ignorance about India’s diversity. “Assam has produced great leaders, scientists, and sportspersons who’ve made India proud,” he said.

The BJP’s Assam unit also launched a scathing attack on Kharge, demanding an apology from the Congress high command for what they called “racist and condescending comments.”

Meanwhile, Priyank Kharge defended his statement, claiming that his remarks were “taken out of context.” He said he was referring to administrative efficiency, not individual talent, and accused the BJP of twisting his words for political mileage.

The episode has reignited debates about regional bias, political rhetoric, and respect for India’s diverse states, especially as elections approach in several key regions.
