In a historic moment for India’s defence forces, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday undertook a sortie in the Indian Air Force’s Rafale fighter jet at the Ambala Air Base in Haryana. With this, she became the first Indian woman President to fly in a Rafale — India’s most advanced multi-role combat aircraft.
The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, was received by senior IAF officials and briefed about the aircraft’s operational capabilities before the flight. She donned the G-suit and helmet, displaying confidence and composure as she boarded the twin-seater Rafale trainer jet.
During the 30-minute flight, the Rafale, piloted by a senior IAF officer, demonstrated a range of maneuvers including combat turns, level flying, and high-speed runs over the Ambala sector.
After the sortie, President Murmu expressed her admiration for the professionalism and dedication of the Indian Air Force personnel. “It was a proud and memorable experience. The Rafale is a symbol of India’s growing defence prowess and technological capability,” she said.
Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari praised the President’s gesture, noting that it reflects her deep connection with the armed forces and boosts the morale of IAF personnel across the nation.
India inducted the Rafale aircraft into the IAF fleet in 2020, significantly enhancing the country’s air combat capability. The fleet, stationed at Ambala and Hasimara, serves as a strategic asset in India’s aerial defence preparedness.
The President’s flight in the Rafale not only marks a milestone in the history of the Indian Air Force but also stands as a powerful symbol of women’s empowerment and leadership at the highest level.
