R Praggnanandhaa has created history by becoming the first Indian to win the Norway Chess 2026 title after a victory over German grandmaster Vincent Keymer in the final round in Oslo on Friday. This is the 20-year-old’s first title of the year.
Pragg had a remarkable run towards the back end of the 10-round tournament, winning four games on the spin after losing two in a row. Over the last four days, he took down Alireza Firouzja, world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and world champion D Gukesh. In fact, Pragg beat Carlsen twice in the tournament.
There was a time when the Indian grandmaster was fighting to stave off a bottom-placed finish. From there, the turnaround was spectacular.
Norway Chess is the only classical-format competition that Carlsen plays.
