PM Says Sardar Patel Wanted the Entire Kashmir to Be Part of India

Published:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, had always envisioned the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India. The Prime Minister made the remarks during an event marking Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary, celebrated nationwide as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).

PM Pays Tribute to Sardar Patel

Speaking at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the Prime Minister hailed Patel’s role in uniting over 560 princely states at the time of India’s independence. He emphasized that Patel’s vision and leadership laid the foundation for a strong, unified, and secure India.

“Sardar Patel had the determination and clarity to integrate all princely states. He wished the entire Kashmir to be part of our nation — and his dream continues to inspire us today,” the Prime Minister said.

Focus on National Unity

The Prime Minister also urged citizens to uphold the spirit of unity and integrity, describing Patel’s leadership as timeless and essential for India’s progress. The event included a Unity Run, cultural performances, and tributes from leaders across political and social spheres.

Historical Context

Sardar Patel played a pivotal role in India’s post-independence integration, successfully bringing most princely states into the Indian Union. While Jammu and Kashmir’s accession was handled separately due to unique circumstances in 1947, Patel’s commitment to national unity has remained a symbol of India’s sovereignty and integrity.

Nationwide Celebrations

Across India, schools, government offices, and civic groups held events commemorating Patel’s contributions. The Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, was illuminated to mark the occasion.
