New Delhi, 17th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in the Birbhum fire tragedy in West Bengal and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the victims and their families.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided from PMNRF to the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the incident, while ₹50,000 will be given to every injured person.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was anguished by the loss of lives in the fire tragedy and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and said the local administration was actively assisting those affected by the mishap.

The fire broke out early Monday at a hotel in Tarapith in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, where several pilgrims were staying. According to the latest official reports, at least eight people were killed and several others sustained injuries in the blaze. Firefighters rescued multiple occupants, while authorities launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The tragedy has prompted renewed concerns over fire safety measures at hotels and accommodation facilities in major pilgrimage destinations. Rescue and relief operations have been completed, while officials continue to assess the circumstances that led to the incident.
