Mohun Bagan Super Giant are set to appoint Panagiotis Dilmperis as their new head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season, with the Greek tactician having mutually terminated his contract with Punjab FC.
Sources close to the development have confirmed that Dilmperis has already completed the process of ending his association with Punjab FC. Only the final paperwork remains before Mohun Bagan make the appointment official.
The move will see Mohun Bagan appoint their third head coach in as many seasons. Last season, Sergio Lobera took charge after replacing Jose Molina, who had guided the Mariners to an ISL double. However, despite a strong campaign under Lobera, Mohun Bagan finished runners-up to East Bengal in the ISL title race on goal difference. The club hierarchy has now decided to hand the reins to Dilmperis.
The 51-year-old arrives in Kolkata after an impressive two-year spell with Punjab FC. Appointed in June 2024, Dilmperis inherited a side looking to establish itself in the Indian Super League. Under his leadership, Punjab evolved into one of the most competitive teams in the league.
Dilmperis, a former professional goalkeeper, will continue a recent trend at Mohun Bagan. Following Jose Molina, he becomes another former goalkeeper to take charge of the club from the dugout.
His appointment is also significant for another reason. Since 2019, Mohun Bagan have consistently entrusted Spanish coaches with the responsibility of leading the team. By turning to Dilmperis, the club has moved away from that pattern for the first time in the modern era, placing its faith in a Greek coach whose stock has risen rapidly in Indian football.
The influence of Dilmperis may already be visible in Mohun Bagan’s transfer strategy. The club have secured the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina midfielder Samir Zeljković, one of Punjab FC’s standout performers last season under the Greek coach. Zeljković was a key figure in Punjab’s midfield and is expected to play an important role in Dilmperis’ plans at Mohun Bagan.
With a reputation for meticulous preparation and a clear tactical identity, Dilmperis now faces the biggest challenge of his coaching career. Expectations at Mohun Bagan are unlike anywhere else in Indian football, where success is measured not only by performances but by trophies.
Once the remaining formalities are completed, Mohun Bagan are expected to formally unveil Panagiotis Dilmperis as the club’s new head coach.
