Operation Sindoor: MEA, IAF, and Army Hold Joint Briefing Amid Intensifying Clashes with Pakistan

New Delhi, May 9, 2025
In response to a second consecutive night of heavy cross-border clashes, the Government of India held a high-level joint press briefing today involving the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Indian Air Force (IAF), and the Indian Army. The joint briefing comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan under the ongoing Operation Sindoor, a coordinated military and diplomatic effort initiated by India following increased ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts along the Line of Control (LoC).

Context: Rising Tensions Along the LoC

The escalation began earlier this week when Pakistani forces reportedly launched multiple unprovoked shelling and firing incidents across key sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian forces responded with what the military described as “precision retaliatory action.” As the situation intensified, the Indian government launched Operation Sindoor, named to symbolize defense and honor.

Details from the Joint Briefing

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, flanked by senior officials from the Indian Army and IAF, addressed the media, stating that India remains committed to maintaining its territorial integrity and will take all necessary steps to defend its borders.

“Operation Sindoor is both a message and a mission. Our response is firm, proportionate, and designed to safeguard civilian lives and critical infrastructure,” said the Foreign Secretary.

Lt. Gen. Harjeet Singh, representing the Indian Army, shared that Indian forces have neutralized at least 12 militant infiltrators attempting to cross the LoC over the past 48 hours. He confirmed the loss of three Indian soldiers, while several others were injured in ongoing operations.

Air Vice Marshal Rajesh Tandon added that the Indian Air Force has conducted aerial surveillance and deterrent patrols, ensuring Pakistan’s airspace violations are met with “instant and calibrated responses.”

International Diplomacy in Parallel

The MEA confirmed that India has reached out to major global powers and the United Nations, sharing intelligence dossiers that point to Pakistan’s role in escalating hostilities. The MEA emphasized India’s desire for peace but reiterated that “talks cannot be held under the shadow of terrorism.”

A diplomatic note has also been handed to the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi, demanding an immediate cessation of cross-border support to terrorist groups.

Civilian Measures and Internal Security

The Home Ministry has placed border states and union territories on high alert. Evacuation procedures have begun in high-risk villages along the LoC, while bunkers and shelters are being stocked with emergency supplies. Internet services in sensitive districts have been restricted to prevent misinformation and panic.

Public Appeal and Political Reactions

The Indian government has urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a brief statement, asserted that “India will not bow to external pressure or provocations.” Across political lines, leaders have called for unity and supported the armed forces.
