There were smiles, the national anthem, the gold medal around her neck and another chapter added to one of India’s greatest sporting careers. For many athletes, that would have been the moment to finally exhale, to celebrate with teammates, soak in the applause and allow the achievement to settle in.
Mirabai Chanu chose a different path.
Barely a day after winning the Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medal on July 26, the Olympic silver medallist was back in the training hall in Glasgow. While the celebrations around the Games continue and weightlifting competitions across categories run until August 2, Mirabai has already turned the page. Her eyes are fixed on a bigger target, the Asian Games in Japan this September.
It is perhaps the clearest illustration of why she has remained at the summit of world weightlifting for so long.
Champions celebrate victories. Great champions prepare for the next challenge before the applause has even faded.
Mirabai’s medal cabinet is the envy of almost every athlete. She has an Olympic silver medal, a World Championship gold, Commonwealth Games one silver, hattrick of gold and Commonwealth Championship honours. Yet there remains one glaring omission, the Asian Games gold medal.
For many athletes, having conquered so much would justify taking a brief pause. For Mirabai, the missing piece has become the motivation.
That explains why, instead of treating Glasgow as the venue of another triumph, she now sees it as the ideal place to sharpen herself further. With India’s chief coach Vijay Sharma also in Glasgow until the conclusion of the weightlifting events on August 2, Mirabai has the opportunity to continue training under his watchful eyes before shifting focus entirely to Japan.
There is no wasted time. No victory lap. No extended celebrations. Only another training session.
Elite sport is often romanticised through medals and podium finishes. What is less visible are the countless hours that follow immediately afterwards, the willingness to begin again when everyone else is still congratulating you. That discipline is what separates sustained greatness from fleeting success.
Watching Mirabai over the years, one realises that her greatest strength has never been just the kilograms she lifts. It is the consistency with which she approaches her craft. Every competition is treated as a stepping stone towards the next one. Every success is acknowledged but never allowed to become a destination.
That mentality has carried her from a young lifter in Manipur to becoming one of India’s most decorated athletes.
The Asian Games now present perhaps the final frontier in an already extraordinary career. It is the one medal that continues to drive her, the one title that keeps her hungry despite everything she has already achieved. And maybe that is the biggest lesson Mirabai Chanu offers.
Greatness is not built on winning medals. It is built on what an athlete chooses to do the morning after winning one.
While Glasgow continues to host the remainder of the weightlifting competition, India’s biggest star is already looking beyond Scotland. The gold she won on July 26 belongs to history. The training session she began on July 27 is about the future.
For Mirabai Chanu, yesterday’s triumph is already complete. The next dream has begun.
