Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled on Sunday that he intends to move forward with U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to relocate the Palestinian population from Gaza, calling it “the only viable plan for a different future” in the region.
Netanyahu discussed the proposal with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who began a Middle East tour by endorsing Israel’s goals in Gaza, emphasizing the need to eliminate Hamas. This has raised further uncertainty around the fragile ceasefire, as discussions for its second phase have yet to begin.
Rubio is expected to face resistance from Arab leaders during upcoming visits to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, particularly regarding Trump’s plan, which includes U.S.-led redevelopment of Gaza. Netanyahu has insisted that emigration from Gaza should be “voluntary,” though critics argue the proposal could be seen as coercive given the severe damage to the area.
Netanyahu affirmed that he and Trump share a “common strategy” for Gaza, adding that “the gates of hell would be open” if Hamas does not free the hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack that ignited the ongoing war.
The first phase of the ceasefire is set to end in two weeks, with negotiations for the second phase, including further hostages’ release, expected to begin soon. Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, confirmed that the second phase will proceed, with productive talks having taken place between Netanyahu, Egypt, and Qatar.
Netanyahu’s office stated that the Israeli security Cabinet will convene on Monday to discuss the next steps.
