Gorakhpur, 16th Sept: Tension gripped Pipraich village in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district on Monday after 19-year-old NEET aspirant Deepak Gupta was killed while chasing cattle smugglers who raided the village before dawn.
According to residents, two vehicles carrying cattle smugglers entered the village around 3 am, untied animals from sheds, and began loading them. When villagers raised an alarm, Deepak joined others in chasing the intruders. As the smugglers fled, they allegedly pulled him into their vehicle and assaulted him.
Deepak’s body was later found about 4 km away with a severe head injury. While locals claimed he was shot, police said the injury did not appear to be from a bullet and suggested he might have been pushed from the moving vehicle. His body has been sent for post-mortem.
Angered by the killing, residents intercepted one of the smugglers’ vehicles, set it ablaze, and thrashed an occupant before police intervened. The other vehicle managed to escape. Additional SP (North) Jitendra Srivastava and Pipraich SHO Purushottam were injured while trying to take the captured smuggler into custody.
Protesting villagers blocked the Gorakhpur road for nearly six hours, demanding swift justice. Senior police officials later persuaded them to disperse, restoring traffic movement.
Senior Superintendent of Police Raj Karan Nayyar confirmed that teams have been deployed to track the accused. “Prima facie, no gunshot wound was found. We are investigating all angles,” he said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed police to take strict action against those responsible.
