Mysuru: Para athlete K.S. Shilpa, hailing from Kanchugaranakoppal village in K.R. Nagar taluk of Mysuru district, has won a bronze medal in the women’s shot put F57 event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, bringing laurels to Karnataka and India.
Shilpa initially finished fourth in the competition with a personal best throw of 7.26 metres. However, she was elevated to the bronze medal position after Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified following an official review of the event.
India secures first double podium finish
Shilpa’s promotion to the bronze medal completed India’s first double podium finish at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.
India’s Sharmila Dhankar clinched the gold medal with a throw of 9.81 metres, while Ghana’s Zinabu Issah secured the silver medal with a throw of 8.65 metres.
The revised results placed Shilpa in third place, earning India another medal in para athletics.
Shilpa expresses pride over achievement
Speaking from Glasgow after her medal-winning performance, Shilpa said the achievement was a proud moment for her and the country.
She said winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games after years of struggle was a memorable milestone in her sporting career.
“It is a proud feeling to have won a medal for the country at the Commonwealth Games. Having gone through a lot of struggle over the past years, standing on the podium at one of the biggest international events is truly special,” she said.
Shilpa added that the medal had brought immense joy to her parents, whom she described as her strongest support throughout her journey.
Thanks family and Karnataka government
The para athlete expressed gratitude to the Karnataka government and Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for extending support to athletes, saying such encouragement motivates sportspersons to perform better at the international level.
She also thanked her former volleyball coach Raghavendra, who encouraged her to switch her focus to athletics, a decision that ultimately led to her success on the international stage.
Eyes Paralympics 2028
Shilpa said her next major goal is to win a medal at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
She expressed confidence that the Commonwealth Games medal would inspire her to work harder and achieve greater success in future international competitions.
India continues strong performance
Indian athletes continued their impressive run on the fifth day of the Commonwealth Games.
Sarvesh Kushare created history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games.
India also added two more silver medals through weightlifters Valluri Ajaya Babu in the men’s 79 kg category and Gyaneshwari Yadav in the women’s 53 kg category.
With these performances, India’s medal tally rose to 10 medals, comprising 2 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze, as the contingent continued its strong showing in Glasgow.
