Former Australian cricketer Moises Henriques has had an outstanding start to his new international career with Portugal as he smashed his maiden T20I century just three matches into his stint with the European side.
The 38-year-old all-rounder delivered a blistering knock of 111 off 51 deliveries against the Czech Republic in the Men’s T20 World Cup European qualifier on Thursday. His innings comprised 12 boundaries and seven sixes as Portugal posted 211/6 before rain interrupted the match. His outstanding knock propelled Portugal to their fourth win in a row as the hosts eventually secured a 91-run emphatic triumph via the Duckworth Lewis method.
This keeps their hopes of reaching the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup firmly alive.
Henriques’ century is particularly significant given that he never managed to score a hundred during his stint with the Australian international cricket team. He represented Australia 44 times across Tests, ODIs and T20Is, but had to wait until switching allegiance to Portugal-the country of his birth, to reach the landmark.
Henriques last represented Australia in the year 2021, during a One Day International (ODI) match against the West Indies in Barbados. He managed only 4 runs before getting dismissed by Akeal Hosein.
This century against the Czech Republic took his tally to 178 runs from three innings in the qualifying tournament, making him the competition’s leading run-scorer. He has also taken on the responsibility of captaining Portugal in his first tournament with the side.
Portugal’s perfect run has set up a crucial clash against Spain, who have also won all four of their Group A matches. The winner from here will advance to the regional final on the qualification pathway for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
