Mohun Bagan Could Become the First Indian Football Club with a Metro Station in Its Name

Published:

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club could soon achieve another milestone off the football field, with a nearest Metro station to the club tent in Kolkata likely to be named after the century-old institution.

The proposal has been initiated by the club and, according to Mohun Bagan general secretary Srinjoy Bose, the West Bengal government has agreed to forward the request to the Centre after obtaining the necessary approvals.

“There will be an increase in the number of Metro stations and one of them will be in close vicinity of the Mohun Bagan club tent. That’s why we have approached the Transport Minister with a request to name the station after the club. It is a long process and requires the Chief Minister’s consent before being sent to Delhi. We are delighted that the West Bengal government will forward our club’s name. We are hopeful it will be approved. There is already a Metro station named after the Salt Lake Stadium, so having one named after Mohun Bagan would be a moment of immense pride for us,” Bose told RevSportz.

If approved, it would be the first Metro station in India to bear the name of one of the country’s historic football clubs.

While no railway station or Metro station Kolkata is currently named after Mohun Bagan, East Bengal or Mohammedan Sporting, there are precedents for honouring sporting institutions and icons through public infrastructure.

In Kolkata, Gostha Pal Sarani commemorates the legendary Mohun Bagan captain, while Sachin Tendulkar Avenue and Pankaj Roy Avenue honour two of Indian cricket’s greatest names.

Outside Kolkata, Siliguri became the first city to name roads after the city’s three football giants, Mohun Bagan Road, East Bengal Road and Mohammedan Sporting Road.

A Metro station named after Mohun Bagan would therefore mark a significant first, recognising one of India’s oldest and most decorated football clubs in the city’s transport network. The proposal now awaits the necessary approvals before being sent to the Union government for final clearance.
