In a significant political development, several Muslim leaders from the Congress party’s minority wing in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, have tendered their resignations. This mass resignation is a protest against the state government’s perceived failure to protect minority communities amid a series of communal killings in the region.
The resignations were submitted during an emergency meeting held in Mangaluru on May 29, 2025. Leaders expressed deep dissatisfaction over the government’s inaction following the recent murder of Abdul Rahiman, a mosque secretary, which they view as part of a pattern of targeted attacks against Muslims. They also highlighted the lack of justice in previous cases involving the killings of Masood B, Mohammed Fazil, and others.
In response to the escalating tensions, the Karnataka government has taken several measures. These include transferring top police officials in the region and forming a new Communal Violence Control Force (CVCF) comprising personnel from the Anti-Naxal Force. This force will be deployed in sensitive areas like Mangaluru, Udupi, and Shivamogga to curb communal disturbances.
Additionally, the Congress minority wing has demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the communal murders and has called for the culprits to be charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). They have also urged the government to provide compensation and employment to the families of the victims, similar to the support extended to other affected families.
The mass resignations underscore the growing unrest within the Congress party’s minority wing and highlight the urgent need for effective measures to ensure the safety and security of all communities in the region.
