Manipur: Curfew Imposed in Churachandpur to Ensure Peace Amid Tribal Tensions

Published:

Churachandpur, April 10, 2025 — In an effort to maintain peace and avert the escalation of tensions, the Churachandpur district administration in Manipur has clamped a curfew in certain areas after a flag-hoisting incident in a contested area between two villages. The incident occurred after community flags were hoisted in a contested area between V Munhoih and Rengkai villages, which are home to the Zomi and Hmar tribal communities.

The curfew has been imposed in the two villages and the sub-divisions of Kangvai, Samulamlan, and Sangaikot to maintain public order and avert any further disturbance, as per an official announcement. The authorities have moved with speed and responsibility, prioritizing law and order, but have not used force.

District Magistrate Dharun Kumar issued the curfew order following flared tensions on April 8 when tribal flags were hoisted in the disputed region. The administration made it categorically clear that the curfew was a short-term preventive measure, taken solely for the sake of maintaining harmony between communities.

In a comforting move for the residents, the curfew will be eased on a daily basis from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the rest of the district until April 17. The window will enable citizens to access basic services, obtain supplies, and continue with essential daily activities without interruption. Authorities have also stated that the relaxation period will be reassessed regularly depending on the changing situation.

Importantly, the district administration provided an interface for talks between the communities. A peace conference was organized with the involvement of Rengkai and V Munhoih village authorities, as well as the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. During the conference, both parties agreed that the problem was due to land settlement and not to be viewed in communal terms. The village leaders voiced a collective commitment to resolving the issue amicably and collectively appealed to citizens not to be victims of misinformation and rumour, especially on social media.

This positive action on the part of both the administration and local leaders sends a clear and encouraging message—that unity, communication, and cooperation can triumph even in times of strain. The joint communiqué of the villages emphasized a commitment to peaceful settlement of differences and stressed the need for sustained brotherhood and coexistence among the communities.

The recent war reminds one of a similar incident in March where skirmishes over a tribal flag resulted in the unfortunate loss of one life. But the present response indicates definite improvement in community involvement and administrative coordination.

Although the curfew is a transitory inconvenience, it is in fact an indicator of a profound purpose: it is to establish peace and permit space for meaningful dialogue and conciliation. All residents have been urged by the administration to continue being calm and cooperative in these circumstances, because collective action drives toward long-lasting understanding and reconciliation.

In the spirit of solidarity, Manipur reaffirms its strength and dedication to peace through united action, understanding, and communication—taking a turn for good towards enduring harmony in the region.
