Mangaluru: In one of the largest narcotics disposal operations carried out in the region, the Mangaluru City Police destroyed seized drugs worth approximately Rs 82 crore after obtaining permission from the competent court. The operation, conducted on July 29, involved the scientific disposal of large quantities of MDMA, ganja, charas, hydro weed and other prohibited substances seized in multiple cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The large-scale destruction highlights the city’s continuing crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse, with police intensifying enforcement against both drug peddlers and consumers across Mangaluru.
87 NDPS cases registered in 2026
According to Mangaluru City Police, 87 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act so far in 2026, resulting in the arrest of 157 alleged drug peddlers.
During these investigations, police seized narcotic substances valued at Rs 8,18,30,130. The seizures included:
- 148.615 kg of ganja (cannabis)
- 7.165 kg of MDMA
- 1.705 kg of hydro weed (high-potency cannabis)
- Other prohibited narcotic substances
Apart from action against traffickers, police also intensified enforcement against drug consumption.
During the same period, 356 cases were registered against 463 individuals for allegedly consuming narcotic substances, reflecting sustained efforts to curb both supply and demand.
Scientific disposal at authorised facility
The destruction programme was held at 11 am on July 29 at Ramky Energy and Environment Ltd. (Re Sustainability Healthcare Solutions Ltd.) located in the Kolnadu Industrial Area, Mulki.
Police said the narcotic substances were destroyed using scientific and environmentally safe methods in the presence of the Drug Disposal Committee, after obtaining approval from the competent court.
The exercise covered narcotics seized in 59 NDPS cases registered across 16 police stations under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru City Police.
Officials said the disposal was carried out in accordance with prescribed legal procedures to ensure secure destruction of the seized contraband.
Drugs worth Rs 82 crore incinerated
The narcotic substances destroyed during the operation included:
- 450 kg of ganja
- 43.260 kg of MDMA
- 80 grams of charas
- 880 grams of hydro weed
- 1.200 kg of bhang
Altogether, drugs valued at around Rs 82 crore were incinerated and disposed of.
Police described the exercise as one of the largest drug disposal operations undertaken in the region, reflecting the scale of anti-drug enforcement over the past few years.
Major MDMA consignments among destroyed drugs
Among the biggest consignments destroyed was 37 kg of MDMA, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 75 crore, which had been seized by Mangaluru East Police Station in a case registered in 2024.
Another major seizure destroyed during the operation was around 4 kg of MDMA valued at approximately Rs 4.47 crore, recovered by Mulki Police Station in a 2025 case.
The disposal also included significant quantities of ganja seized in separate investigations.
These comprised 106 kg of ganja, valued at around Rs 20 lakh, seized by Konaje Police Station, and 111 kg of ganja worth approximately Rs 36 lakh, recovered in a case registered by Moodbidri Police Station.
Police seek public support
Mangaluru City Police appealed to the public to continue supporting the fight against drug trafficking by promptly sharing information about narcotics-related activities.
The Commissioner of Police urged citizens to report information about drug peddling or illegal narcotic substances through the police department’s dedicated QR code or by contacting the Police Control Room on 112 or 9480802321.
Police reiterated that public participation remains crucial in identifying drug networks and preventing the spread of narcotic substances, while assuring that information shared by citizens would be acted upon promptly as part of ongoing anti-drug enforcement across the city.
