Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for his inaugural bilateral visit to India, scheduled from October 6-10. This visit comes on the official invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu and marks an important moment in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Upon his arrival, President Muizzu was warmly welcomed by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kiriti Vardhan Singh. During his stay in India, the Maldivian leader is set to hold discussions with President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior Indian officials to address a range of issues pertinent to both countries.
In addition to New Delhi, President Muizzu will travel to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he is expected to participate in various business events aimed at strengthening economic ties between India and the Maldives.
Muizzu previously visited India in June for Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. This visit holds significant importance as it follows Muizzu’s controversial rise to power, largely fueled by his ‘India Out’ campaign, which called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel and support staff from the Maldives. The campaign had strained diplomatic ties, leading to a tense atmosphere between the two neighboring countries.
Relations further deteriorated when members of the Muizzu cabinet employed derogatory language against Prime Minister Modi following his social media posts from Lakshadweep. Although those ministers were subsequently removed from their positions, the incident exacerbated tensions and negatively impacted tourism in the Maldives, a sector heavily reliant on Indian visitors.
