In a major boost to the sporting infrastructure in the state, the West Bengal Government has decided to revamp the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium and Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. State Sports Minister Dr Indranil Khan and Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta on Friday inspected the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium. The venue is in dilapidated conditions after years of no maintenance. The Sports Minister assured that a new eight-lane athletics track will be re-laid at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium. Athletics tracks were removed when Atletico de Kolkata organised the Indian Super League matches at the venue.
The state government has unveiled a budget with dedicated, large-scale allocations aimed at transforming the sports infrastructure landscape. Announcing the key provisions after the presentation of the state Budget on June 22, Indranil said the allocations reflect the government’s long-term vision of strengthening sports development from the grassroots to the elite level.
The biggest highlight of the sports budget is the allocation of ₹150 crore for the establishment of West Bengal’s first-ever Sports University. The university will focus on Olympic disciplines, professional coaching, sports science, research, and athlete development programmes, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for sporting excellence.
The government has also earmarked ₹100 crore for the renovation and modernisation of two of the state’s most iconic sporting venues — Rabindra Sarobar Stadium and Kanchenjunga Stadium. The revamp is expected to significantly upgrade infrastructure at both facilities.
Addressing the long-standing shortage of world-class sporting infrastructure in North Bengal, a new international-standard outdoor stadium with a full-fledged athletics track, along with an indoor stadium will come up.
In a major grassroots initiative, the state government also announced that every Assembly constituency in West Bengal will receive a mini-indoor stadium under the Khelo India scheme. An allocation of ₹5 crore has been earmarked for each constituency, ensuring that modern sporting facilities reach every corner of the state.
