Evolution is the one constant in sport. Throughout history, every sport has embraced fresh ideas designed to make competition fairer, faster or more entertaining, and cricket has rarely been reluctant to embrace change. The rise of franchise cricket has only accelerated that evolution, with leagues across the world continually testing new rules in pursuit of a better spectacle. Some changes have been widely embraced, while others have divided opinion, but they all reflect the game’s willingness to evolve with the times.
A bat replacing a coin for the toss, the X-factor rule and the Power Surge in the Big Bash League (BBL), red cards for slow over rates in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and the Impact Player Rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are all examples of cricket’s constant reinvention. Because the IPL is by far the world’s premier franchise competition, no innovation has generated more discussion than the Impact Player Rule. In effect, it allows teams to use a twelfth player, fundamentally changing the tactical balance of a T20 match.
Since its introduction in the IPL, the tournament has witnessed a sharp rise in high-scoring contests. With the luxury of an extra player, batters have been able to play with greater freedom and aggression, tipping the balance further in favour of the batting team. Unsurprisingly, the Impact Player Rule has sparked intense debate over its advantages and drawbacks. Several former cricketers and experts, including the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, have spoken against it. According to Tendulkar, the rule has altered the balance of T20 cricket by encouraging higher-scoring games, weakening the importance of all-rounders and discouraging players from developing skills across multiple disciplines.
Yet, while purists remain sceptical, the majority of fans relish seeing sixes raining into the stands and batters showcasing an ever-expanding range of strokes. There is little doubt that high-scoring thrillers have become a major attraction in modern T20 cricket. Recognising that appeal, the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to introduce the Impact Player Rule from the 2026 season, adding a fresh tactical dimension to Sri Lanka’s premier franchise tournament.
In doing so, the LPL is following the IPL by embracing one of T20 cricket’s most debated innovations.
Whether the move proves to be a success remains to be seen, but it will undoubtedly add another layer of intrigue for supporters. For the five franchises, meanwhile, it will present a fascinating tactical challenge as coaches and captains work out how to maximise the rule’s potential.
One of the fastest-growing T20 leagues in the world, the LPL has also introduced another progressive regulation: every team must field at least one Under-23 player in its playing XI. The initiative is expected to accelerate the development of promising young cricketers by providing them with valuable exposure at the highest domestic level.
With a host of T20 globetrotters set to light up the competition, the upcoming LPL season promises to be bigger and better than ever. The introduction of these two new rules adds another layer of excitement, ensuring the tournament continues to evolve while creating fresh opportunities for both established stars and emerging talent.
