“Every seed needs sunshine to bloom” is a well-known metaphor. In the cricketing world, many uncapped players competing at grassroots or state level can relate to it. There was a time when players had to wait for opportunities to feature in major tournaments, perform well and then catch the selectors’ attention. The story of MS Dhoni hitting sixes into the stands where the selectors were seated during a domestic match is a famous one. Opportunities and platforms were limited back then, and building a career in cricket was far more difficult.
Now, unlike in the past, players have several ways to showcase their talent. If you have talent, it is likely to be noticed, whether by someone watching from the stands or picked up through social media platforms. The range of opportunities has increased significantly. Talent needs opportunities. Talent needs platforms. In today’s world, there are plenty of both for aspiring cricketers. The same applies to retired players who still have the hunger to compete.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was a trailblazer, and today there are franchise leagues across the globe. Most Test-playing nations now have their own domestic T20 competitions. However, in South Asia, there are relatively few well-established leagues. One competition that has attracted both emerging and established cricketers is the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Introduced in 2020, the LPL has grown into one of the most promising T20 leagues, with an influx of renowned franchise cricketers from around the world.
Players who have already featured in the tournament speak highly of it. The LPL is fast emerging as one of the leading franchise leagues in world cricket and is steadily establishing itself as a major force in the Asian subcontinent.
The introduction of the LPL was like a breath of fresh air for Sri Lankan cricket. Since its inception, the league has become a breeding ground for talented players. Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Nuwanidu Fernando are among those who have made a name for themselves through the competition.
Mohamed Shiraz, Kugathas Mathulan and Sahan Arachchige will be looking to move closer to their maiden national call-ups with strong performances in this year’s LPL.
The league’s growth is reflected in the willingness of several top-tier cricketers to continue participating despite a packed international calendar. Even recently retired players such as Vijay Shankar, who represented India at the World Cup, will be in action in this season’s LPL.
For players from Associate nations — Dipendra Singh Airee (Nepal), Brandon McMullen (Scotland), Haider Ali (UAE), Shadley van Schalkwyk (USA) and Kushal Bhurtel (Nepal) — the upcoming LPL could serve as a launchpad to greater opportunities in franchise cricket. All of them have already made their mark for their respective countries and will now be hoping to light up the tournament.
Someone like Virandeep Singh of Malaysia will be looking to grab every opportunity that comes his way this season, especially given that cricket is not among the country’s most popular sports. He could yet become a trailblazer for Malaysian cricket.
Not every cricketer begins his journey under bright lights or in front of packed stadiums. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity on the right stage to change everything. As another season of the LPL approaches, hundreds of players will arrive with different stories but the same ambition — to leave with their names remembered. For many, this could simply be another tournament. For a fortunate few, it could be the moment their careers truly begin.
