Lionel Messi added another record to his remarkable FIFA World Cup career, one he would rather forget, after missing his fourth penalty in World Cup matches (excluding penalty shoot-outs) during Argentina’s Round of 16 clash against Egypt in Atlanta.
The Argentine captain saw his 19th-minute spot-kick saved with Argentina trailing 1-0 following Yasser Ibrahim’s early goal. The miss means Messi has now failed to convert penalties against Iceland (2018), Poland (2022), Austria (2026) and Egypt (2026); twice as many as any other player.
However, the record does little to overshadow Messi’s extraordinary World Cup legacy.
Earlier in the 2026 tournament, he became the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, overtaking Miroslav Klose. His tally now stands at 20 goals across five editions of the tournament – 1 goal in 2006, 4 in 2014, 1 in 2018, 7 during Argentina’s triumphant 2022 campaign and 7 more in 2026.
Messi has also built a reputation for responding to setbacks on football’s biggest stage. After missing a penalty against Poland at the 2022 World Cup, he inspired Argentina to the title. His miss against Austria earlier in the 2026 tournament was followed by a stunning brace later in the same match.
