India’s star shuttler Lakshya Sen saved the best for last as he ended India’s second day at the BWF World Championships on a high note, overcoming Austria’s Collins Valentine Filimon in a dramatic three-game match in front of an excited home crowd.

The excitement around Lakshya’s match was evident on a Tuesday evening at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Children in the stands could be heard screaming, “Let’s go India, let’s go!”

However, Lakshya had a slow start. World No. 128 Filimon built an 18-12 lead in the opening game, leaving World No. 14 Lakshya with plenty to think about. Lakshya fought back to reduce the gap to 15-20, but Filimon held his nerve and closed out the game 21-16.

The second game saw a completely different Lakshya. He took the opening point and started building momentum, moving ahead 2-1. The scores were level at 7-7 before Lakshya began to take control with his powerful smashes. He moved ahead 11-8 at the interval and continued to put pressure on his opponent after the break. His continued attack helped him stretch the advantage to 21-8 and force a decider.

In the decider, Lakshya raced to three straight points and quickly took a 6-1 lead. He maintained the intensity that had defined his second game, taking an imposing 11-1 advantage at the interval.

The Indian showed pure dominance throughout the rallies, extending his lead to 15-3 before closing out the decider 21-4.

The 16-21, 21-8, 21-4 victory sealed Lakshya’s place in the Round of 32 and gave India a strong finish to Day 2, as the home crowd signed off their evening by celebrating another comeback from the Indian star.
