Mumbai: Actor Kiara Advani has spoken about the emotional and thematic depth of the upcoming film Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups, saying the project presents a very different perspective on relationships and the dynamics between men and women.
The actor’s remarks come months after the film generated intense online debate following the release of its “Introducing Raya” teaser, which drew criticism from some social media users over its portrayal of intimacy and gender dynamics.
Directed by Geetu Mohandas and headlined by Yash, the film has emerged as one of the most talked-about upcoming Indian productions in recent months.
Kiara says film challenged her perspective
Speaking about the film in an interview with Bombay Times, Kiara revealed that the script initially challenged even her own understanding of relationships and emotional boundaries.
“With Toxic, I think it completely changes the way you see the man-woman dynamic,” the actor said.
She explained that filmmaker Geetu Mohandas introduced her to a more unconventional emotional space through the narrative.
“And in fact, even for me, when Geetu narrated the script to me, it took a while for me to understand that okay, this is also normal. It may be grey, it may be not in your conventional space, but there’s a certain liberation in love,” she added.
Actor describes character as emotionally layered
Kiara also opened up about her character Nadia, describing the role as emotionally complex and deeply layered.
“When Nadia was narrated to me, I was like ‘wow’, I wish I was capable of being so detached and liberated in my own thoughts,” she said.
The actor further described Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups as a “complete drama”, suggesting that the film combines emotional intensity with unconventional storytelling.
Industry observers believe the film aims to explore mature themes and morally ambiguous relationships in a stylised cinematic setting.
Teaser sparked online debate
The film attracted controversy earlier after the release of its “Introducing Raya” teaser, which featured an intimate scene inside a car parked in a cemetery while explosions and gunfire unfolded in the background.
The visuals triggered criticism from some social media users, who accused the film of promoting misogynistic and problematic imagery.
The debate intensified because director Geetu Mohandas is also known as a founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective, an organisation advocating gender equality and representation in the Malayalam film industry.
However, supporters of the film argued that the teaser should be viewed within the context of cinematic storytelling rather than isolated visuals.
Film faces multiple release delays
Apart from the controversy, the project has also experienced several release postponements.
The film was initially scheduled for release in April 2025 before being shifted to March 19, 2026. However, the release strategy was reportedly affected by geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, which impacted theatrical business in the Middle East market.
The makers later considered June 4, 2026, as a revised release date before dropping the plan again.
According to reports, Yash has stated that the team is currently focusing on a broader international release strategy and does not want to approach global distributors until the film’s final version is completely ready.
Film remains one of the year’s most anticipated projects
Despite the delays and controversy, Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups continues to remain among the most anticipated Indian films due to its ambitious scale, unconventional storytelling and star cast.
The film also marks a significant collaboration between Yash and Geetu Mohandas, blending mainstream action-drama elements with darker emotional themes.
Fans are now awaiting an official announcement regarding the film’s final release date.
