Kerala Becomes First State in India to Eliminate Extreme Poverty

Published:

In a landmark achievement, Kerala has become the first state in India to eliminate extreme poverty, according to official data released by the state government on Friday. The milestone marks a significant step forward in Kerala’s long-standing commitment to social welfare, inclusive growth, and equitable development.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the achievement while highlighting the state’s success under the “Nava Kerala Mission” and targeted welfare initiatives aimed at uplifting vulnerable communities. “This is not just a statistical milestone but a social transformation. Kerala has proven that focused governance and people-centric policies can eradicate extreme poverty,” Vijayan said.

The State Poverty Eradication Mission (Kudumbashree) played a crucial role in identifying and supporting households facing multidimensional poverty. The government implemented schemes addressing housing, healthcare, education, nutrition, and income generation, ensuring holistic development rather than just income-based support.

As per the assessment, around 64,000 families previously classified under the “extreme poverty” category have now achieved sustainable living standards, with continued monitoring to prevent relapse into deprivation.

Experts have lauded Kerala’s achievement as a model for other Indian states, emphasizing the importance of community-based initiatives, decentralized planning, and robust welfare infrastructure.

With this milestone, Kerala once again reinforces its reputation as a leader in human development indices, continuing its legacy of pioneering social progress in India
