India made a perfect start to their BWF World Championships campaign on home soil as Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi joined the winning list on the opening day, defeating Spain’s Nikol Carulla and Carmen Maria Jimenez 22-20, 21-14 in the women’s doubles first round at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Monday.
Playing in front of an excited home crowd, the Indian pair fought closely in the opening game. Carulla and Jimenez tried to stay in the contest, but Kavipriya and Simran kept their composure to seal the game 22-20.
The Indian pair then carried that momentum into the second game. They maintained their advantage throughout and closed it out 21-14 to book their place in the next round.
They will now face world the No. 9s, Stefani Stoeva and Gabriela Stoeva, in the round of 32.
The victory completed a memorable opening day for the Indian contingent. Earlier, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun opened India’s campaign with a win in men’s doubles, while PV Sindhu also began her women’s singles campaign with a comfortable victory.
The biggest moment of the day came when debutant Ayush Shetty stunned top seed and reigning world champion Shi Yu Qi in a thrilling three-game battle.
