Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly opened café in Surrey, British Columbia, was targeted in a shooting incident late Thursday night, with reports suggesting a possible Khalistani connection. The incident occurred just days after the launch of Kap’s Cafe, Sharma’s first venture into the restaurant business.
According to Surrey Police, multiple gunshots were fired at the café around 1:50 a.m. local time. Several staff members were reportedly inside the premises at the time, but no injuries have been reported. Approximately 10 bullet holes were found in the café’s front windows.
In an official Instagram statement, Kap’s Cafe expressed shock and sadness over the incident:
“We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up.”
The café added that it remains committed to its mission and thanked supporters for their kind words and encouragement:
“Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community. From all of us at Kap’s Cafe, thank you and see you soon, under better skies.”
A report by NDTV suggested that a known Khalistani separatist may be linked to the shooting. However, Surrey Police spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed that the investigation is still in its early stages.
“Connections to other incidents and potential motives are being examined. Once that’s done, we’ll have a better idea of what happened,” he said.
Authorities continue to probe the incident as the community and Kapil Sharma’s team grapple with the shock of the attack.
