England and India arrive in Taunton with the T20I series finely balanced and both teams aware that every game from now until the World Cup carries significance. After India struck first and England responded strongly in Bristol to level the contest, the decider offers both sides a chance to make a statement ahead of a World Cup that is rapidly approaching.
For England, it is an opportunity to continue building momentum under a new coaching group and stand-in captain Charlie Dean, while India will be keen to show that their young side can consistently challenge one of the tournament favourites in their own backyard. On the eve of the series finale, experienced opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge spoke about her return to the squad after becoming a mother, England’s growing confidence, her partnership with Sophia Dunkley and the excitement surrounding a World Cup summer on home soil.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge relishing return after becoming a mother
England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge is back in international colours just days after becoming a mother and says she is excited to return to the cricket field ahead of the India T20I series decider and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup later this summer.
“It feels amazing to be back,” Wyatt-Hodge said. “Coming in with the good news about the birth of my daughter Daisy, who’s 12 days old today. It’s been a pretty unbelievable last couple of weeks.”
The experienced opener admitted that balancing cricket and parenthood will be a new challenge, but described the experience as “incredible”, while praising her wife Georgie and joking that England have gained a new supporter in baby Daisy.
Calm atmosphere building confidence ahead of the World Cup
Although England have several matches remaining before their World Cup opener, Wyatt-Hodge believes there is a positive energy within the squad.
“There feels like a very good vibe around the group,” she said. “Nice, calm and composed. Everyone’s enjoying each other’s company.”
The 34-year-old stressed the importance of staying present despite the growing excitement around a home World Cup, adding that England will approach the tournament one game at a time rather than looking too far ahead.
Charlie Dean impresses in captaincy role
With regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt unavailable, Dean has stepped into the leadership role and has already made a strong impression.
“She was really, really good, very calm and knew what she wanted to do,” Wyatt-Hodge said. “She was quick and efficient with her fields.”
Wyatt-Hodge added that the temporary captaincy presents Dean with a valuable opportunity to gain international leadership experience while England await Sciver-Brunt’s return.
Backing Sophia Dunkley to deliver a big score
Wyatt-Hodge also voiced strong support for opening partner Dunkley, who has shown aggressive intent at the top of the order without yet converting her starts into a major innings.
“Her intent has been unbelievable,” Wyatt-Hodge said. “I think a big score is just around the corner.”
The England opener believes Dunkley’s fearless approach is exactly what the team need in T20 cricket and expects the batter to thrive on what is traditionally a good batting surface in Taunton.
No extra pressure despite calls for more boundary hitters
Asked whether discussions around England needing more boundary hitters increased the pressure on her, Wyatt-Hodge dismissed the suggestion.
“For me, it’s the best place to bat in T20 cricket,” she said. “As long as I’ve got the intent and bravery, that’s what I’ll judge myself on.”
With the series level and a home World Cup on the horizon, England will hope Wyatt-Hodge’s return provides another boost as they continue building momentum for the biggest assignment of their summer.
