Maharajganj, 16th Oct. Mobile internet and broadband services remained suspended in Maharajganj for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, following communal violence that erupted on Sunday during a Durga idol immersion procession. The suspension has disrupted daily life and local businesses, according to officials.

Although the situation is gradually returning to normalcy, with no reports of further incidents since Tuesday, heavy police deployment remains in place, especially within a 20-km radius of Maharajganj town in Mahsi tehsil.

Enhanced Vigilance at the Border

Given Maharajganj’s proximity to Nepal, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has increased border vigilance. “We have coordinated with Nepal’s Armed Police Force to restrict unnecessary movement across the India-Nepal border through Rupaidiha,” said Ganga Singh Udawat, Commandant of SSB’s 42nd battalion. The heightened security follows directives from the force’s DIG-IG headquarters.

Communal Tensions and Police Crackdown

The violence began when clashes broke out during the Dussehra celebrations, leading to the death of Ram Gopal Mishra, 22, and injuries to about six others. As a result, over 50 suspects have been arrested, and five FIRs have been registered related to the violence and arson. Authorities continue to search for key accused Abdul Hamid and his sons.

Local police confirmed that the situation in the affected area is now under control, with normalcy returning to other parts of the district. However, the suspension of internet services has severely impacted business activities. “Business worth crores has been affected due to the lack of internet,” said Gauri Shankar Bhaniramka, president of the UP Udyog Vyapar Mandal’s Bahraich chapter.

Efforts for Stability

In response to the unrest, a control room has been established to monitor the situation. Additional intelligence teams have been deployed to track the activities of alleged rioters via social media. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been receiving hourly updates and has directed the deployment of additional forces to the troubled areas.

Ongoing Medical Assistance

Among those injured during the violence, 45-year-old Satyavan Mishra, who is physically disabled, was transferred to Lucknow on Tuesday for advanced medical treatment. He had initially been admitted to the Bahraich medical college.

As peace gradually returns to the area, authorities remain vigilant to prevent any further disruptions, while the local community awaits the restoration of communication services to regain normalcy in their daily lives and businesses.
