At the iconic Istora Senayan, the Indian contingent experienced a mixed bag of results on Day 1 of the Indonesia Open 2026.

PV Sindhu began proceedings on a winning note, followed by a brilliant upset by Amsakarunan Hariharan and MR Arjun in the men’s doubles. However, several disappointing exits followed, including India’s No. 1 shuttler, Lakshya Sen, who bowed out in the opening round.

Sindhu, back in the top 10 after a wait of 954 days, battled her way past Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 25-23, 21-16 in 51 minutes to progress to the pre-quarter-finals of the Super 1000 event.

However, the scoreline does not fully reflect the contest, as Busanan threw everything at Sindhu and made the Indian star work hard for the win. With this victory, Sindhu extended her dominant head-to-head record against the Thai shuttler to 21-1.

Up next, she faces a potential Round-of-16 clash against World No. 1 An Se-young, against whom Sindhu’s Singapore Open campaign ended in the quarter-finals last week.

In the men’s doubles, Hariharan and Arjun defeated Malaysia’s experienced pair of Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong. After winning a closely contested first game, the Indian duo completely blew their opponents away in the second, sealing a 21-18, 21-10 victory in just 33 minutes.

Heartbreak in the Singles Draw

Former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth bowed out early after falling to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 19-21, 15-21. Srikanth displayed flashes of his vintage brilliance early on, but unforced errors crept into his game during the crucial moments of both sets, ultimately costing him dearly and resulting in a first-round exit.

The most disappointing result came from India’s No. 1, Lakshya Sen, who went down to local favourite and rising star Alwi Farhan. The World No. 10 suffered a 19-21, 16-21 straight-games defeat, bringing his Super 1000 campaign in Jakarta to an end on the opening day.

In the women’s singles, Malvika Bansod endured a tough outing. Drawn against Thailand’s seventh seed Pornpawee Chochuwong, Bansod struggled to find answers to her opponent’s deceptive drop shots and excellent court coverage, losing 12-21, 10-21.

Treesa-Gayatri Comeback Halted

Making their return to competitive action after a two-month hiatus, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand faced a difficult opening-round challenge.

The Indian pair lost 14-21, 12-21 to crowd favourites Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, bringing their comeback to an early end.

Meanwhile, the mixed doubles duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also suffered a first-round defeat, losing 11-21, 10-21 to the sixth-seeded Chinese pair of Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui.
