In a move aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and travel convenience, the Indian Railways has introduced a new feature that automatically assigns lower berths to senior citizens and women aged 45 years and above during ticket booking. The update comes as part of the Railways’ continued efforts to make train journeys more inclusive and passenger-friendly.
According to officials, the auto-allocation system is now integrated into the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). When passengers from eligible categories book tickets online or through counters, the system will automatically prioritize lower berths, ensuring ease of access and safety for those who may find it difficult to climb upper or middle berths.
“This feature will especially benefit elderly passengers and middle-aged women traveling alone or with family. It minimizes the need for manual intervention and promotes comfort-based seat allocation,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.
Earlier, passengers had to manually request lower berths during booking or depend on Travel Ticket Examiners (TTEs) to accommodate such requests. The automated system now eliminates this hassle, improving the overall passenger experience.
The initiative also aligns with the Railways’ ongoing digital transformation to streamline services, enhance accessibility, and ensure a more personalized travel experience for diverse age groups and genders
