Indian passenger's water request sparks heated VietJet exchange: WATCH

Published:

Hanoi: A request for a glass of water on a VietJet flight reportedly turned into a heated exchange between an Indian passenger and a member of the cabin crew after the passenger claimed that the crew questioned whether he and his mother were being truthful about needing the water to take medication.

Content creator Yadupriyam Mehta shared a video of the incident on Instagram, saying the confrontation took place shortly after the flight took off. According to his account, his mother had asked a member of the cabin crew for water because she needed to take her medicines.

What began as a routine request allegedly escalated after the crew member questioned the reason given for requesting the water.

Passenger says crew questioned his mother’s request

In his social media post, Mehta described the experience as “extremely disappointing” and criticised the airline over what he said was the treatment of his mother.

He alleged that the cabin crew behaved in a “disrespectful and unprofessional manner” over what he considered to be a simple request.

According to Mehta, his mother had specifically explained that she needed water to take medication. However, the exchange reportedly became tense when a crew member questioned whether the passengers were telling the truth.

A crew member can be heard in the video telling the passengers, “You may be lying to me.”

The statement appeared to anger Mehta, who responded by questioning why he would lie about his mother’s medication.

He also questioned why passengers would have to produce their medicines simply to receive a glass of water.

Crew member cites previous incidents

The video also captures the crew member explaining that similar situations had allegedly occurred previously.

According to the exchange recorded in the clip, the crew member said some passengers had lied about needing water in the past.

That explanation appears to have further intensified the disagreement between the passenger and the crew.

Mehta maintained that his mother’s request was genuine and that the situation could have been handled more courteously.

Sharing the video, he urged people to think carefully before travelling with VietJet and said that passengers should not be treated disrespectfully.

He also said he was posting the incident so that the relevant authorities could examine the way passengers were treated during the flight.

Video sparks mixed reactions online

The video has since generated a divided response on social media.

Some viewers expressed sympathy for Mehta and his mother, arguing that a passenger who says they need water to take medication should be treated with courtesy. They felt that the situation could have been resolved without an argument and that providing a small quantity of water would have avoided the confrontation.

Others, however, urged viewers to avoid drawing firm conclusions from the short video.

Several users pointed out that the recording appeared to begin after the interaction had already started and therefore did not necessarily provide the complete context of what happened before the camera was switched on.

Some commenters also observed that Mehta and his mother could be heard speaking loudly during parts of the exchange, while the crew member appeared comparatively calm in the portion of the conversation captured on camera.

This led to questions about whether the viral clip represented the entire incident or only one part of a longer disagreement.

Questions remain over complete context

As with many incidents shared through short social media videos, the available footage does not independently establish exactly how the disagreement began or what was said before the recorded portion.

Mehta’s account represents his version of events, while the cabin crew member’s explanation in the video provides another perspective. There is no indication from the material shared that the complete interaction has been made publicly available.

The allegation that the crew accused the passengers of lying has nevertheless become the central focus of the online discussion.

The incident has also prompted a wider conversation about how airlines and passengers should handle requests involving medical needs.

Passengers may sometimes require water to take prescribed medicines, while cabin crew members are also responsible for following onboard service and safety procedures. Clear and courteous communication can therefore be particularly important when a routine request becomes disputed.

Debate over how the situation could have been handled

Many online users argued that the disagreement could have been avoided through a calmer exchange.

From the passenger’s perspective, Mehta believed that his mother’s medical requirement should have been accepted without suspicion. From the crew’s perspective, the video suggests that previous experiences with passengers allegedly making similar claims influenced the response.

The available footage does not establish whether there were specific airline procedures governing the provision of water in that particular situation.

It also does not establish whether the crew member’s remarks were intended as an accusation directed specifically at Mehta’s mother or were part of an attempt to explain why the request was being questioned.

These details have contributed to the mixed reaction online.

Incident raises questions about passenger service

The controversy highlights how quickly an ordinary interaction on a flight can escalate when passengers and crew members disagree over a request.

Passengers travelling with medication may find it useful to keep necessary medicines accessible and clearly communicate any immediate requirement to cabin crew. At the same time, cabin crew members regularly deal with large numbers of passengers in confined environments, making clear communication important on both sides.

In this case, Mehta has called for the incident to be reviewed by the relevant authorities. Whether any formal action follows would depend on the full circumstances and any investigation by the airline or aviation authorities.

For now, the video remains the main source of the public discussion, with social media users split between those supporting the passenger’s account and those calling for the complete context before reaching a conclusion.

The incident ultimately underlines the importance of respectful communication in the cabin, particularly when a passenger says a request is connected to medication or another immediate need. While passengers expect reasonable assistance from airline staff, crew members must also balance individual requests with established procedures. A calm exchange on both sides could potentially have prevented what has now become a widely discussed confrontation online.
