Operation Sindoor and Pakistan’s Retaliation
On May 7, 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor to neutralize terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was carried out in direct response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 27 people, including tourists and civilians.
Following the Indian strikes, Pakistani forces reportedly launched a series of missile and drone attacks aimed at critical Indian infrastructure. Among the intended targets was the Golden Temple, a site of immense religious and cultural significance to Sikhs around the world.
Defense of the Golden Temple
The Indian Army successfully deployed its advanced air defense systems, including the indigenous AKASH missile system and L-70 Air Defence Guns. These systems intercepted the incoming projectiles, preventing what could have been a devastating strike on Amritsar and the Golden Temple.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned Pakistan’s actions, accusing it of targeting not only military facilities but also civilian locations such as temples, schools, and residential areas. He reaffirmed India’s position that any attack on its sovereignty or cultural landmarks would be met with a strong and appropriate response.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a formal warning to Pakistan, urging it to halt its provocations and cautioning that India would not hesitate to take further military action if necessary.
