China continues to be the world’s largest consumer of tobacco, accounting for nearly half of global cigarette consumption, while India ranks second in overall tobacco use, according to global health and industry estimates.
The findings come as countries across the world observe World No Tobacco Day, raising awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco consumption.
China leads global cigarette consumption
China reportedly consumes around 2.7 trillion cigarettes annually, making it the dominant player in global tobacco use. Experts attribute the country’s high consumption levels to widespread smoking habits, low-cost cigarettes and the presence of a state-controlled tobacco industry.
Unlike many countries that use graphic health warnings, cigarette packaging in China often features colourful designs and traditional motifs alongside limited health warnings.
India’s challenge goes beyond cigarettes
India ranks as the second-largest tobacco consumer globally, but its tobacco landscape differs significantly from China’s. Smokeless tobacco products such as gutka, khaini and betel quid tobacco remain widely used across the country.
In addition to cigarettes, products such as bidis, hookahs and cigars continue to contribute to tobacco consumption, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Health experts warn that smokeless tobacco is strongly linked to oral cancer, a major public health concern in India.
Tobacco epidemic remains a global concern
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco use in all forms remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. The organisation describes the situation as a global tobacco epidemic responsible for more than 7 million deaths annually.
While China and India lead in overall consumption volume, some of the highest smoking rates are recorded in Pacific Island nations and parts of Eastern Europe.
Public health experts continue to call for stronger tobacco-control policies, awareness campaigns and cessation support to reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases globally.#WorldNoTobaccoDay #TobaccoControl #IndiaHealth #PublicHealth #CancerAwareness #newskarnataka
