Pakistan women’s team head coach Wahab Riaz said he was unaware of the reasons behind India’s apparent no-handshake policy, but insisted it would not make a significant difference even if it continued.

At the toss of the Women’s T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur appeared to avoid the customary handshake with Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana.

Riaz was asked about the incident during the post-match press conference, to which he responded:

“See, I don’t know. I left cricket a long time ago, so I don’t know the reason behind not shaking hands. But if things are going to continue like this, then so be it. It won’t make a big difference.”

Riaz also felt Pakistan conceded 15 to 20 runs too many, which ultimately proved costly as India thrashed Pakistan by 64 runs in their tournament opener.

“I think we gave away 15 to 20 extra runs. Having one extra fielder inside the circle during the last two overs helped them. With only three fielders on the boundary, they were able to build momentum. Overall, I believe we conceded around 15 to 20 runs more than we should have,” said Riaz.

Deepti Sharma and Smriti Mandhana were India’s standout performers. Deepti claimed a five-wicket haul, while Mandhana scored a brilliant half-century in challenging conditions.
