IND vs IRE: Lorcan Tucker to lead injury-hit Ireland, uncapped trio earn maiden call-ups for home T20Is

Newly appointed captain Lorcan Tucker will lead Ireland in the two-match T20I series against India, starting on June 26. Cricket Ireland confirmed the appointment while announcing the 14-member squad on Monday.

Former captain Paul Stirling, all-rounder Curtis Campher, and pacers Mark Adair, Josh Little and Barry McCarthy, along with batter Jordan Neill, were unavailable for selection due to injury concerns.

Tucker will have a new-look squad at his disposal against a strong Indian side.

Speaking after being named captain, Tucker said: “It’s obviously a great privilege, and not one I thought would arrive when I started my career all those years ago. There’s a feeling of responsibility to the playing group and organisation to represent them well, and also to all the other captains who came before me. I look back with admiration at all the captains who have led Ireland in the past and am proud to now join them.”

Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra have earned their maiden call-ups to the senior Ireland Men’s squad. Moondra becomes the first Asian-origin player to be selected since Simi Singh. Reuben Wilson is yet to be capped in T20ls, although he made his Test debut last month against New Zealand.

Speaking about the uncapped players, national men’s selector Andrew White said: “We can’t disguise the fact that we are hampered by injury at present, with at least five first-team regulars missing. However, my view in such circumstances is that one player’s misfortune is another player’s opportunity. As such, we’ve named three uncapped players in the squad of 14. Jai Moondra is a left-arm bowler with the ability to swing the ball at a decent pace, potentially providing a point of difference that we need to continue to develop moving forward.”

Ireland squad for India T20Is: Lorcan Tucker (c), Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Matthew Humphreys, Gavin Hoey, Matthew Hollard, Liam McCarthy, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, Tim Tector, Reuben Wilson.
