Prasidh Krishna produced a devastating spell to claim his maiden ODI five-wicket haul and help India bowl Afghanistan out for 218 in 44.2 overs in the third ODI at Chepauk on Saturday.

The right-arm pacer returned figures of 5 for 23 from 8.2 overs as India took control of the contest and moved within touching distance of a 3-0 series sweep. What stood out in his spell was his discipline in length, as he largely stayed back of a full length and operated on good and short lengths.

Prasidh struck early to remove Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran, leaving Afghanistan in trouble at the top of the order.

He later added the wickets of Darwish Rasooli and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi to complete a memorable five-for. At one stage, Afghanistan were reduced to 36 for 4 as Prasidh ripped through the batting line-up.

Afghanistan’s recovery was led by Shahidi, who produced a fighting century, scoring 102 from 131 deliveries.

He found support from Azmatullah Omarzai, who made 50, as the pair helped the visitors pass the 200-run mark.

“Really happy to be coming in on a hot day and bowling well and helping the team,” Prasidh said while speaking to the broadcasters during the mid-innings break. “The work’s been going on for quite some time. We’ve been working on lengths, regardless of the format I’m playing. Morne’s been in my ears for quite some time and I’m happy to be bowling well.”

Alongside his latest five-wicket haul, the fast bowler has three four-wicket hauls to his name in ODIs. The Karnataka pacer has now taken 45 wickets in 25 ODIs at an average of 25.78.
