Andy Flower has confirmed that he is not in contention for the role of England Men’s Test team’s head coach after Brendon McCullum was sacked.
Speaking on the media day as London Spirit Men’s head coach, Flower was direct when asked about ruling himself out: “I have, yes,” he said.
The former England coach explained that balancing the role alongside his commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL would be difficult. Flower has been superb as the RCB coach, making the team win back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026.
“For me, personally, I don’t think I could have both, especially with the IPL being held in the first couple of months of the English summer,” he said. “If I was England Test coach, I would like to be here, watching and interacting with the people I need to watch and interact with. For me that wasn’t a possibility.”
Flower confirmed discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board( ECB) but reiterated his contentment: “I am aware of the head coach vacancy of the England national team. I have spoken with Rob (Key) at the ECB on this topic. The bottom line for me is I’m very happy with the work that I’m doing at the moment.”
He added: “It would be a privilege for me or anyone to be the head coach but I’m really comfortable with what I am doing and I’m going to stick with doing that.”
