England Test cricket team captain Joe Root has expressed his disappointment after fast bowler Brydon Carse was involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Derby.
Carse was briefly arrested and later de-arrested after images of him in handcuffs went viral on social media. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has referred the matter to the Cricket Regulator. Until then, Carse has been left out of the squad for the second Test against Pakistan.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Test at Lord’s, Root said, “If I’m being brutally honest, I’m really hacked off, I’m really disappointed. After last week’s performance, we’re sat here and we’re talking about something that is not related to it at all.”
Carse was not on cricketing duty at the time, as he had been released to play for Durham, but he remains a centrally contracted player.
Root also revealed that he had spoken to Carse after the incident and said that he was apologetic. “I’ve spoken to Brydon… I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn by saying he’s very upset, very apologetic and understands his actions. I’m sure that when he gets his chance he will say that himself.”
He added, “But I don’t think it’s the isolated incident itself, it’s the fact we keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it’s detracting from what we’re doing on the field.”
England have already faced several incidents involving players in recent months, raising questions about the team’s conduct away from cricket. Root admitted that the team now needs to rebuild its relationship with supporters.
“In many ways we’re going to have to earn a lot of trust back, and it’s something that we’re going to have to live and breathe consistently,” he said.
Root has also made it clear that he wants players to take responsibility for their actions and avoid situations that could lead to trouble. He said, “That’s what lies ahead of us, to change that. I just think, if we don’t put ourselves in certain situations, it’s not something we will have to worry about.”
